The Portuguese Vacuum Society (SOPORVAC) was created in 1986 as a non-profit, technical and scientific organization. It is the Portuguese organism that represents IUVSTA (International Union for Vacuum Science, Technique and Applications). Its main goals are to promote and contribute to the study, discussion and dissemination of problems and techniques regarding vacuum related sciences and technologies, and inspiring ideas that favour its development. SOPORVAC is active in the stimulation of the professional and scientific improvement of the associates. This society also aims to encourage intellectual, cultural and social exchange between members.

SOPORVAC is interested in establishing exchange activities and services with similar associations, domestic and foreign, especially through the participation in international meetings and cooperation in common projects.
